Post-fast foods

It’s a fast day today (17th of Tammuz). What are you planning to break your fast on? Scrambled eggs and bagels here, and coffee.

    bagels & lox (for those who want that at my place)…various tabachnik soups, fruit, brown rice with milk & splenda/sugar-yummy post fast mild food (even though it may sound weird)…

  2. Brown rice with milk and sugar are yummy. In our house we do Vanilla silk because of my daughter’s allergies. Bulgar works well also. Mmmmm. Now I’m hungry!

  3. this year, we’ll be breaking with our replica wedding cake top-tier! (and it will haunt me from when i pick it up this afternoon…)

  4. HOMEMADE bagels! I am at work but I made the dough last night. I have 2 girls at home who volunteered to boil & bake the bagels. Bagels are super easy to make and come out to about 8 or 10 cents each – a little cheaper than our local bagel place ha ha ha.

    And we have some Costco lox in the freezer that we need to defrost I guess.

  5. Always the same at my house:
    Bagels with cream cheese, lox, red onions and tomato.
    Pasta with some sort of sauce – depending on my mood. Plain marinara if I’ve got no energy, creamy garlic sauce if I’m in the mood to bother cooking. Tonight we have a special treat. I bought a bottle of Pomegranate’s vodka sauce. I’m still in sticker shock. I hope it’s worth it…..

  6. I usually serve pasta or eggs before the fast. I always serve pasta after the fast. Sometimes we have some chocolate chips first for some quick sugar.

  9. I made up my mind: it’ll be eggplants in tomato sauce (ratatouille) and quinoa…

    I started cooking. End of fast is just 1h away…

  10. When I was growing up, my mother always made tuna & macaroni salad to break the fast on. It’s pretty simple. Mashed tuna, cooked macaroni, mixed in a large bowl with a blend of ketchup & mayonnaise, and perhaps a little onion powder.

    As a vegetarian, I still make it, but I replace the tuna with a can of chick peas.

  11. I really really really want some coffee and a good pastry. Maybe an orange cranberry scone. Or a warm chocolate chip cookie.

  12. carrot cake and nanaimo bars (for those who’ve never had: think coconut-y brownie, then custard, then a top layer of chocolate). mmmmm

    why am I splurging? When I exit the fast, it’ll almost be my birthday! (my hebrew birthday is right before the three weeks, I thiiink)

  13. I wish I could fast. Fast days make me feel like I’m a “not good enough” jew.

    • i cannot fast either, so i do the best i can. you are good enough so long as you listen to your body and keep it healthy.

        i agree..
        many ppl are not able to fast for health or other reasons & this fast is one of the minor fasts not like Tisha B’av & Yom Kippur & some ppl. are even exempted from fasting on those fasts for various health reasons. i agree w/ mrs. melissasg that as long as you do the best you can, you are a good enough jew. taking care of one’s body is a mitzvah too (“venishmartem et nafshoteichem” which translates as taking care of your body)

        • oh, I understand, but it sucks to have to constantly explain to the resident busybodies at shul on fast days why I’m having a protein bar. and sipping water or black coffee, and how it is not related to being a convert.
