Exercise and Weight Loss Challenge

or alternatively, Win an In the Pink Mug

This started off as a challenge just for my KoD, but I want you all to feel challenged too, to change your life for the better. The KoD feels that he needs to lose some weight and get into better shape. I have refrained from agreeing or disagreeing with him. What? I am gonna tell my husband “yes you need to lose weight”?!! …. I want to live, darn it!! What I have told him repeatedly is that if he feels he needs to lose weight, instead of grumbling about it – DO something. Get to the gym, start a diet, be proactive. I, as you know, am a big walker. That’s had the kibosh put on it due to my current broken pinkie toe – but I am intending to get back into the power walking as soon as I can.

So, my darling KoD, and others who wish to take the In The Pink Challenge, here is my challenge for you.

Firstly – please post how much weight you want to lose / gain / or if you just want to maintain.

Secondly – you must choose at least one activity to help you with this weight loss – swimming, walking, going to the gym etc, and post your goals about how often you plan to do this.

Thirdly – keep track of what you are eating. I am not saying to go on a specific diet – but eating healthy and eating smart is certainly the way to go. (perhaps, my RD husband, you can give us some basic diet tips?) LiveStrong can help you keep a food and exercise diary.

Fourthly – Shabbat is your day to cheat on the diet and to not exercise. Use it wisely.

Every week I will be asking you to check in with me here on the blog, and let me know how the challenge is going. If you are a fellow blogger, please feel free to link to your blog here and write about the challenge and how you feel it’s helping you.

The Prize? The prize is feeling better about yourself, knowing you worked hard to get where you want to be. (excuse me a sec….yeah I know Trep gave away a mug, but not to me…ok Fine, push a little more why dontcha??!!)

Ahem…There will be a prize of an In The Pink mug. You, my readers, will vote for who most deserves it, once the challenge is over. That way there will be no accusations of nepotism.

Challenge will be 2 months long. Starting12.00 am EST September 1st 2009 and ending October 30th 2009 at 11.59pm EST. That gives you all a few days to get yourselves in gear.

Exercise Update

Well, I am really getting into this workout thing. I am enjoying it. I am trying to walk places instead of driving. Yesterday I took 25,000 steps! (so much for Trep’s 10K challenge lol). I have also made a commitment to eat better and to eat regularly. I am a skinny little thing and really not so into food, but with all this burning calories I have to feed the fire.


There are some awesome websites out there that help you keep track of what you eat and how much you exercise and how many calories you consume and burn. The one I have started to use is LiveStrong.Com . If you click on “The Daily Plate” that’s where you can monitor everything. If you have a weight goal it helps you keep track of your progress. It’s really very cool.


I just need a web application that gives me a kick in the patootie at 5 am – it’s very hard getting up when everyone else is sleeping, but I am motivated.


I even made the kids walk more yesterday. We had an appointment and we usually drive there. We walked, they complained bitterly, it took 15 minutes, and then they said it really wasn’t so bad after all. Once they get used to the idea they won’t even notice how much they walk. Kids these days are way too sedentary.


Within the next couple of weeks I am going to start stomach crunches – I don’t want a six pack, I think that looks ugly on women, but after 4 babies my stomach can use some toning. But I am not sure I can do crunches – any tips for the best way to do it without straining one’s back?


I am really feeling good about myself these days, I am more patient with the boys, I have more energy, and I am finally sleeping better. I want to stay with these positive feelings forever, so I will stick to my new routine.

10K challenge

My buddy Treppenwitz    has issued a challenge – 10,000 steps a day. Read all about it here. I have decided to join him in his quest for physical fitness. His challenge is for a month, starting May 24 2009, but I decided to start a few days earlier. I bought a pedometer, which works but annoys me with its constant clicking, so I am all set.


I am adding my own wrinkle – no elevators, and I live on the 9th floor. I am allowed to take the elevator only when I have stuff to shlepp. I do my jogging in the morning, a walk at night, and stairs all day long. 10,000 steps – easy shmeasy….

Run Rabbit Run

It’s 6.18 am and I just returned from my first jog/walk in a very long while. I left the house at 5.37 am and picked up my running buddy, who just happens to be ex-navy, so she knows how to whip our butts into shape. We walked to the park, jogged around it, walked home. In the rain. I didn’t want to push myself too much so I took it easy, but even so some muscles in my thighs and hips are already complaining.


I am off for a shower and then some carbs and protein, and then I will start the kids’ day with a smile (and perhaps a little pat on the back that I actually got up and went jogging.)


We planned the same for tomorrow. Oy vey! (Proud of me, my KoD?)


Alright folks, it’s time this couch potato got off her keister and moved her body around in such a way as to benefit it. Yes, I am talking exercise. I used to run, I was pretty good at sports day in school from what I can remember way back in the mists of time. Gym membership would be a great idea, but lack of funds kind of preclude that from happening.

So, I have a friend with whom I can go jogging in the mornings and I am thinking about committing to it. It means getting up earlier than usual, leaving the comfort of my warm and toasty bed, but it would really benefit me. I just need you guys to keep me motivated because I know I will try to beg off more often than not…..
