WWYD – Gym Peeping Tom

From a reader:

Hadassah!  At the kosher gym this morning I saw a VERY chassidic man (long payos, chassidish hat and coat) open the door a crack to peek at the women doing a women’s only Pilates classes. Most of these women are Orthodox and or Chassidic too. He just didn’t sneak a peak he stayed there watching them.  Some of the women, because it’s a women’s only class in a closed room with no windows, uncover their hair and wear tee shirts and clothes they would not allow a man to see them in ever. Which is why they go to the kosher gym!!!

What should I have done?

Sign me “Wanting to smack the Yoilie”….

OK, what would I have done? I would have walked over to the door and slammed it in his face. Hard. Or asked the instructor to have the man removed.

What would YOU have done?

  1. Certainly the peeper would have fled once he saw someone approach the door. I suppose a better question is why the door does not have a lock on it if it is a share facility (where both Men and Women would be present [albeit segregated] at the same time.)

  2. I’m a big believer that women have to take back control in these situations (like when men try to cop a feel on the subway). Humiliate him. he probably does this regularly. Snap a pic next time. Slam the door in his face. Yell loudly.

  3. The woman who noticed him should have whipped out her phone & snapped a picture of him, then given the picture to the gym administration and have them ban him.

  4. Tell his wife.

Maybe he was looking for his wife.

    • that’s what I was thinking, but it doesn’t mean he should be able to get away with it. there are surely other less intrusive means (maybe asking a gym staff person).

  6. I kind of would like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he was looking for his wife, but a) there is obviously a better way that staring at a class and b) he presumably would know better than to stare at a class of ladies.
Probably the best thing would be to get the instructor to deal with him, they probably would be a little more diplomatic, because personally i would have probably yelled at him.

  7. You say it was a kosher gym, right? He was just providing the Rabbinic supervision!

  8. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself- I had to watch.

  9. I think I have to agree with most of the posters. Shorty and LLL have a point if indeed his wife were in the class, but I think if he really wanted to see his wife he would have informed the gym personnel. The fact that he stared (at women who would have been embarassed to be watched if they dressed for exercise assuming that it would be private) is enough to prove that something less than savory is going on.

  10. Why not ask him in an “outdoor” voice from wherever you were at that time: “Can we help you?”.

  11. i like mel’s suggestion. Hadassah, I am sure you didn,t mean to be insensitive, but the moniker you wrote was stereotypical and not kind.

  12. I would do the same thing, in fact I was at a shul last week in LA with a mechitza that was too tool, so while we were dancing around the bimah during lecha dodi I lifted the curtain and took a nice long peek to see if there was anything worth staying until the end of shul for.

  13. The first thing you should do is stop using slurs like “the yoilie”.
I should not have to explain this but it’s exactly the same as nigger or kike.

As for practical suggestions, I second everyone elses way of dealing it, really quite simple.

  14. perhaps he just wanted to talk to his wife?

I mean come on, it was not the shower! Everybody was dressed! So what’s the point for a peeping tom?

Do you really think all these sweating stinking women will get him aroused?

  15. fille, don’t be naive, it will arouse him very much. He comes from a very sexually repressive culture.

  16. whoops! so sorry, hadassah. rereading it, i realized it was not you who used the moniker, but the reader who wrote you. i should have just commented that it should not have been printed.
speaking of not being printed- these inappropriate comments from some of the too-uninhibited here are not helpful and not nice. How about a little more selectiveness in accepting comments?

I don’t think pilates is so high intense that you get all sweaty from.

What do YOU think?
